The hip is a ball and socket joint and like other lower extremity joints, it is susceptible to arthritic changes. The hip joint is actually located in the groin area and many people who complain of hip pain actually point to their low back or sacroiliac region or the buttock aspect of the hip area.

The lateral pain is due to bursitis. It can be treated conservatively with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), Physical Therapy and injections.

The low back or sacroiliac pain is treated in as a back problem.

The majority of hip problems are related to tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis and athletic injuries, such as tears around the acetabulum or socket, which may require a hip arthroscopy.

Hip arthritis is a very common problem and it may be treated with NSAIDS and rest. However, the process frequently progresses to severe degenerative joint disease (DJD), which manifests itself as increased pain and decreased motion.

This problem is treated with total hip replacements, which along with total knee replacement are the 2 major joint replacements performed.
